When it comes to putting your best face forward, there’s a little secret designers want you to know—where you place your bathroom lighting matters just as much as the fixtures you choose. Positioning lights at eye level, either on the mirror or right beside it, creates the most flattering, natural light for your daily routine.
"Lighting placed at eye level in front of you will always provide the best, most even illumination for your face," says Cody Wade, Senior Project Designer at Wade Design & Construction. "Recessed ceiling lights are a good start, but they can cast shadows. To get the best lighting, install fixtures directly on a larger mirror or place sconces on the sides of a smaller mirror."
The right setup depends on your space. "In a larger bathroom, sconces on either side of the mirror work beautifully to balance the light," Cody explains. "For a smaller dressing area or vanity, mounting lights directly onto the mirror is a smart way to maximize both function and style. One client needed great lighting for getting ready in the morning and before going out at night, so placing the fixtures directly on the mirror made perfect sense."
Once the placement is decided, the real fun begins—choosing fixtures that complement your space. "There are so many stylish options out there," Cody says. "Whether you love Edison bulbs, sleek modern sconces, or vintage-inspired fixtures, the right choice will enhance both your lighting and your overall bathroom design."
